An Inspiring Evening of Song, Movement, Puppetry, and Storytelling
At the ISB Library theatrical event “Stories We Share,” our community enjoyed an original cantastoria performance by Brooklyn Beanstalk, featuring Alumni parent Stephanie Larriere. Cantastoria is a theatrical form by which performers tell stories while gesturing to images. In this case, the story was inspired by our students’ reflections about what happiness means to them and featured banners they created in their art classes. The night was a celebration of our community’s love of language — and languages! — as well as our passion for getting to know the world around us and one another by sharing stories.
Before the original ISB cantastoria, we were thrilled by a pair of performances by ISB Alum Zack Pope ’23, who opened the night with a poignant and funny monologue from the musical “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” and a moving rendition of the song “Unruly Heart” from the musical “Prom.”
As story advocates, story lovers, and storytellers, “Stories We Share” reminded us that underneath our differences in language, culture, and experience, we are connected by the stories we tell and share. The cantastoria’s message of “less is more” was underscored by the amazing time we all had during this very DIY, supremely collaborative stage experience.
