Our 4th and 5th Graders received a very special visitor in writer and illustrator, Jorge Cham. Jorge is the best-selling author of PhD Comics, a popular comic strip about life in academia, and the Emmy-nominated Co-creator and Executive Producer of Elinor Wonders Why, an animated series on PBS Kids. He came to ISB though, to talk to our students about his middle-grade novels, Oliver’s Great Big Universe and its much-anticipated sequel Oliver’s Great Big Universe: Volcanoes Are Hot!

Jorge has a real knack for making science fun and accessible for everyone and, as if his funny stories and the scientific facts that ground them weren’t enough, he drew our students into Oliver’s next adventure right before their eyes. What’s more, originally from Panama, Jorge spoke to our Spanish 4th and 5th Grade students in their target language. He closed his very hilarious and really informative talk with some advice for the aspiring writers among our students. Jorge wrote Oliver’s Great Big Universe about his son, and he told our 4th and 5th Graders: “Write about yourself, your family, your friends. Learn about the universe, be creative, and tell your own stories!”
