K-Fai Steele’s “Two Sides of the Same Story”
K-Fai Steele visited with our 2nd Graders in the ISB Library to talk about her work as an illustrator. She explained that she sees writing and illustrating as ways to tell “two sides of the same story.” K-Fai gave examples of her “early work” from when she was our students’ age, and she also showed her studio where she demonstrated to our students that, for her books, she uses “the same materials that you use in your classes!” She read her book, That Always Happens Sometime, the story of Max, a neurodivergent kid who often gets distracted but ultimately finds his way through a long school day, in which he triumphs even though things didn’t go exactly as planned. She also taught our students the method she uses to draw the characters in her book — complete with “a bunch of bananas for hands!”
