As part of learning about cellular biology, our 7th Grade science class created a diagram of a cell. We are learning about the different types of cells and how they work, breaking each type of cell down and learning about them through research, Power Points, labs, and posters. The purpose of this project was to be able to see a cell in-depth and to understand how it functions; what better way to understand a cell than to create a large-scale model?

We started off the project with a series of research questions, including:

  • What does each organelle (cell part) do?
    How does it help the cell?
    How is the cell structured?
    What happens to the cell if an organelle is damaged or altered?

Once we answered these questions, we each focused on an organelle, drawing all of its details and labeling all of its parts. When all of the organelles were ready, we created a cell membrane and mounted it on a large poster. We then put the cell together, combining the organelles we made to create one massive cell. The final project is located on the bulletin board in front of room 303. All of the organelles are labeled and information about them is next to the diagram.
